History & Status of the Fishery
A targeted gill net survey for Walleye on Pike Bay (11-0415-00) was conducted during the week of 08/30/2022. This survey was the first conducted on an expedited 3-year rotation since Pike Bay was selected for inclusion in a statewide study of zebra mussel effects on Walleye populations (2021). Pike Bay was listed as infested with zebra mussels in 2014 and with the exception of 2020 (Covid year) Pike Bay has been stocked annually with Walleye fry at the rate of 1,000 fry per littoral acre (2,238,000 fry). This was the third gill net survey conducted on Pike Bay since the switch to fry stocking in 2013.
A total of 78 Walleye were captured resulting in a CPUE of 5.2/GN which was down considerably from 9.4/GN in the previous survey (2019). Despite the decline in abundance, the 2022 CPUE is still higher than all but two of eleven surveys conducted during the years of fingerling and mixed-life stage stockings.
Walleye captured ranged in length from 11.2 inches to 26.0 inches with a mean length of 17.4 inches and mean weight of 1.9 lbs/fish. Otoliths were used to assign ages to all gill net-caught Walleye. A total of ten year classes were identified with seven consecutive from age-3 (2019) to age-9 (2013). The 2019 year class was the most abundant cohort identified, comprising 39% of the catch.
Back-calculated lengths for Walleye ages 1 through 8 and mean annual increments of back-calculated lengths were derived using scale samples. Mean back calculated lengths were considerably greater for Walleye ages 1 through 5 compared to 2019, with a mean length of 16.5 inches compared to 15.6 inches at age-5 in 2019.
