City of Rocks State Park

Come experience volcanic rock formations like you have never seen before at City of Rocks State Park. Some sculptures are up to 40' high and the columns resemble city skyscrapers. With over five miles of hiking trails, you will surely have plenty of ways to enjoy the sites.

From rock climbing to mountain biking, your crew will get your fill of outdoor activities. If you have youngsters, they can earn their junior ranger badge by completing various tasks. You can pick up the packet at a ranger station.

In addition to hiking in the park, you can take a Historic Walking Tour of Deming, NM, where you can visit the county courthouse that dates back to the early 1900s. City of Rocks State Park is also located near Silver City, NM, where you can take in the nightlife in the downtown arts district. There are a 156-seat movie theater and many art galleries. If you are planning your trip in September, check out the Silver City Blues Festival. There are also multiple wineries in the area for the family wine connoisseur.

Camping season is year-round but peak season is June - September. Bring along your hiking boots, mountain bikes, and rock climbing gear to see all that City of Rocks State Park has to over.


Transportation

Driving

Wide open terrain provides for easy access to the park. Park your RV at your campsite and enjoy the scenery. From hiking to mountain biking you and your crew will stay busy. It is recommended to bring an alternate vehicle as some of the terrain may be tricky depending on where you are exploring

Parking

There are limited parking areas so alternate vehicles are highly recommended. Parking is located at the visitor center near the state park botanical garden.

Campsites in City of Rocks State Park

Reservations Camping
City of Rocks State Park Campground

There are a total of 50 sites at the campground, however, only 10 sites can be reserved ahead of time that have electric and water hook-ups. Each site is tucked in among the rock formations for the ultimate experience.

Your campsite in and of itself is part of the experience, as each one has a different view of the campground and surrounding area.

All sites have a fire pit with grate and a picnic table. There is a bathhouse on-site and group camping is also available if needed. Reservations are highly recommended.

Local activities include bouldering, hiking, mountain biking, rock climbing, bird watching and much more. Venture into town and experience the arts district of Deming, NM and Silver City, NM.

Seasonal Actvities in City of Rocks State Park

In-Season
Bouldering

Avid rock climber? There are several guidebooks available regarding bouldering in the area. You can climb the boulders in the park and view the park from a new angle.

Be prepared to free climb the boulders, as you are not allowed to bolt or add fixed rope to the rocks. City of Rocks BoulderFest occurs every Halloween weekend if you want to experience all that bouldering can offer. This is by far not a common activity and you will not want to miss it.

Hiking

With over five miles of varying trails, City of Rocks State Park is a hikers paradise. Trail ratings are posted at the Visitor Center. The Hydra Trail has an extension to Table Mountain, where hikers can take a steep climb to the top to view southern New Mexico at its finest.

The trail can be accessed by multiple points throughout the park. There are large granite markers indicating the trails. Take the Planet Walk Trail to view a number of astronomical displays.

Mountain Biking

Pack up your mountain bike and head to the trails. City of Rocks State Park and surrounding areas will provide over seven miles of varying difficulty. Be sure to view the trail labels before venturing out to make sure you are on the right path.

The rocky terrain will test your skills and heighten your love for biking. Trail maps are available at the visitor center. These trails will keep you entertained for hours. Tire sealant is strongly suggested in case a tire is pierced.

Off-Season
Bird Watching

City of Rocks State Park provides many habitats for native and migrant birds. There are ranger-guided walks or you can venture off on your own. The state park also welcomes avid bird volunteers to expand the program and bird species knowledge to the area.

During your visit you may find cactus wren, scaled quail, eastern meadowlark and if you are lucky maybe a great-horned owl. You can even view the area park photo galleries on local sites. Grab a guide and get bird watching!

St. Clair Winery & Vineyard

Taste award-winning wine at St. Clair Winery & Vineyard located just 30 miles from City of Rock State Park, you can experience the area to its fullest.

Every Friday evening, experience live local music and various wine tasting options. If it gets a little breezy outside, you can bring your party inside in their event center. The winery has been family operated for over 35 years. Situated on 15 acres, the winery has a capacity for a total harvest of over 500,000 gallons. Be sure to add this to your list of must-sees in the area.

Deming Luna Mimbres Museum

Visit the old National Guard Armory, which is now the Deming Luna Mimbres Museum. The building dates back to the early 1900s but was not purchased by New Mexico until 1977.

The museum hosts a doll room full of beautifully decorated dolls, an art gallery, solarium, and a tack room. There is also a military room that showcases major events that occurred in the area.

Mining in the area was a major source of income in the late 1800s. Various gems and minerals are on display for viewing.
